This gentle treatment removes dead skin cell effectively with stainless steel diamond heads. The heads are made with miniature diamond grain with different grits for different areas and skin types. There is a vacuum suction to promote cellular renewal and stimulation of collagen and elastin fibres. The 'Diamond Tips' are much more user friendly and cut down on the cost of consumables quite unlike the Old Crystal Microdermabrasion units which could be messy, expensive and clog up! They also offer so much more flexibility for the therapist with better visible results and better profit margins. Different tips provide different coverage for the body and there are small refining tips which offer the ability to treat sensitive areas such as around the eyes. It is also possible to remove blackheads, spots and pimples. The Diamond Microdermabrasion systems are extremely successful, focusing and improving texture, and smoothing irregularities for the following complaints:
- Fine lines and wrinkles including delicate areas around the eyes
- Sun damaged, uneven and thickened skin
- Pigmentation
- Acne scarring a safe and effective form of acne treatment
- Enlarged pores and dull skin
- Congested skin
- Stretch mark reduction
- An exceptional body treatment
This treatment can be performed directly or indirectly and can be used to heal, improve and clean the skin using an electrical current or frequency that alternates at over 100,000 cycles per second. The intensity of the current is controlled with a switch. The current is applied via a variety of glass electrodes. The therapist fits a suitable glass shaped head into a hand held holder which passes a current through to the glass electrode.
There is a small concentration of gas in the head which ionises when the current passes through the head (the head will glow in a colour dependant on the gas contained in it). This current stimulates the skin cells.
The Fulgurator is a glass head specifically designed for ‘zapping spots’. By doing so, the bacteria is destroyed encouraging the skin to recover.
(a) Desincrustation
This is a deep, cleansing treatment that draws impurities out of the skin by softening dead skin cells and sebum. This is performed before the nourishing iontophoresis treatment. It has a softening effect called cataphoresis- which produces alkali (sodium hydroxide). The active electrode must be negative (the moving one). Desincrustation lotions are available as well as gels and lotions. These products contain ions with a negative charge which help the product to penetrate the skin. The negatively charged ions are repelled away from the active electrode and are attracted toward the positive charge of the indifferent (not moving) electrode. Effective on treating:
- Greasy Skin - To deeply cleanse and kick-start sluggish skin
- Dry Skin - To accelerate flow of sebum and remove adhesions
- Preparation of skin for iontophoresis - allowing for deep absorption of products
(b) Iontophoresis
This allows products to be pushed deeper into the epidermis (anaphoresis). It allows for water-soluble products to be introduced into the skin. The effects depend on the product and the active electrode.
The principle is that like charges repel and opposite charges attract, to aid the penetration of an ionised (+ or -) active product. Many ampoules, creams and gels can be used for Iontophoresis and the effects can be quite dramatic. The penetration is best carried out later on in the facial when the skin has been prepared, so that the active ingredients will remain deep within the skin. This will help to the skin to produce more collagen and anti-ageing products can be introduced deeper into the skin than under normal circumstances.
Commonly known as 'Electrical muscle stimulation' (EMS), it uses electrical impulses to contract and relax facial muscles in order to produce a tightening and toning effect on the muscles. It is often referred to as ‘the lazy persons workout’ as the results are similar to that of a high impact gym workout.
For this treatment the client does not have to participate. Electrodes are simply placed on muscles causing a contract and release impulse. This exercises the muscles 'passively' as client participation is not necessary in order for this type of exercise.
Although this seems an ideal way to exercise the muscles, treatments must be carried out at least 2-3 times a week for 4-6 weeks to achieve results. Top-up treatments will then need to be carried out once a month.
In addition to this, a skin-care regime should be facilitated along with facial exercises.
For at least a decade celebrities and those in the know about anti aging have been booking themselves in to beauty clinics and spas for a microcurrent facial. Often referred to as the ‘non surgical facelift’ it is the popular choice for those who do not want cosmetic surgery.
A microcurrent facial works by applying gentle electric stimulation to the surface of the skin using fine dual prongs applied to various regions of the face.
Despite what you might think – it's not at all painful. You may experience slight tingling but most people find it relaxing and many actually fall asleep.
The use of electrodes to stimulate facial muscles is nothing new. The technology was originally developed to treat patients with facial palsy and in sport to give intensive physio for injuries.
Once the visible improvements in the tone and texture of the skin became apparent – microcurrent systems were also developed for the beauty industry. In recent years there has been increased consumer demand for non invasive methods of facial rejuvenation. A microcurrent facial became one of a number of treatments – like led light therapy and thermage – that could be offered to women seeking a non surgical solution.
The technology has been thoroughly tested and results have been very impressive. It uses a low intensity, direct current that produces a low frequency electrical pulse of differing waveforms. Small impulses have shown to be beneficial in improving the appearance of the skin. A treatment, depending on the area treated will take between 30-60 minutes and a course is always recommended. For the best results, recommend once weekly for a 6 week period with one top-up a month for maintenance.
It is used on localised areas of fatty deposits and cellulite, always working with the direction of the lymph vessels to the nearest lymph node.
To cause lift and stimulation of the under-lying structures you only apply vacuum suction treatment. The vacuum suction is aimed to improve the circulation of the lymph where lymph fluid are used to transports waste products and fatty materials of body metabolism and digestion.
When used properly, vacuum suction is a gentle and effective treatment, and so relaxing that the client should fall asleep when this treatment is being carried out! The only rule of thumb with vacuum is that you should work towards the lymph nodes, to reinforce the natural draining ability of the lymphatic system. Vacuum suction is effective when used in conjunction with other treatments, or it can be offered on its own, and good results will be seen in the skin's appearance after a course of treatments. It is equally effective on the body: the principle being the same, just with bigger cups.

FAQ's
Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 3 qualification in beauty therapy and/or a successful skills test and interview.
Your training days will teach you all of the practical and theory needed to pass this accreditation.
- Once you have been registered with the VTCT, you will receive your NVQ pack which will include questions and assignments to work through to cover all the theory that you will need to know, this is studied AT HOME or AT THE ACADEMY (to be set by your Tutor).
- Case Studies and further treatments will need to be carried out on models and other students to gain the experience you need, and this should be recorded using a 'treatment plan' with photographic evidence as and where necessary. In your workbook, there will be units which cover a wide range of conditions and clients. This criteria will need to be met.
- Once you have completed the written assignments, case studies, and portfolio building (a folder to hold all the information with colour coded dividers), this is then cross referenced to your assessment book.
- Once your portfolio and assessment book is complete, you will need to send it (we recommend recorded delivery just in case) or bring it to us here at the Angel Academy for marking. It is always an idea to keep a copy of your work for revision. This process will involve an Assessor/Tutor and an IQA so allow a minimum of 6 weeks for marking.
- If anything is missing, you might be asked to re-submit some additional information or case studies, there is no charge for this.
- When your portfolio/Online work is signed off, you will be invited to sit an online exam via Zoom. The exam will consist of multiple choice questions and diagrams to be labelled (depending on the units) and you will be expected to achieve a minimum of 70% to pass the first part. The second part can be done via oral questioning and will take you to 100%. The multiple choice tests will either be by way of an exam paper or will be completed online with a computer/laptop. Following this you will perform a series of practical assessments. Here you will have to perform each treatment fully and in a commercially viable time for each unit that you wish to be accredited for.
- The units you are being assessed on will affect the time you will need to be here so be prepared.
You will be expected to attend a session, if requested, where an EQA will be here with us. As part of your supervision and accredited learning, this session will also have an Assessor, and IQA present. This is part of the examination process.
Your Portfolio
- You will be given full instructions on how to put your portfolio together. If you work through the portfolio and assessment book step by step you will have completed all the necessary work to submit your portfolio to us.
Assessment Book(s)
- An Assessment Book is given by the Academy which you will need to cross reference to once your portfolio is complete.
- The Assessment booklet(s) will show you the Performance Criteria with a range which will need to be covered. Some sections of the booklets are completed by the Academy assessor and Internal Quality assurance verifier and others you will need to complete yourself once you have completed your portfolio. The pages you need to complete are known as the Range pages and the Essential Knowledge & Understanding pages (EKU).
- The Essential Knowledge and understanding section in your assessment book(s) and your training manual(s) will help with your revision. The essential knowledge and understanding requirements highlighted in white are assessed by a multiple choice test paper. The manual(s) should have all you need in them to complete your assignments.
Submission of Portfolios
- Your portfolio can take time to be marked and confirmation of this sent to you via email or text.
- We are aware of the time you will spend on your portfolio and we will also need to spend a lot of time reading it and assessing it before we can put you forward for the next available assessment session. We hold assessment sessions every other month in our Academy. The sooner you send in your completed portfolio the sooner you will be allocated an assessment date.
- The date and time of your Assessment visit (IQA and EQA) will be confirmed to you only after we have received your portfolio and it has been marked and signed off.
- A student who has an assessment must attend on the assessment date given "unless there is a family bereavement or illness where a doctor's note must be shown". This is for external verification sampling purposes.
- Depending on how many units you are being assessed on, you may be required to attend for 1 day or more.
Assessment and bringing a Model or Client
- Students can bring their own client. We also provide models on days booked in advance.

5* Rating
Just finished my second course with Angel Academy and once again it was amazing. I have traveled the uk and aboard for training but Deborah is one of the best teachers I have ever had. It’s more then just about the course with Angel Academy, it’s after when you are working as a therapist, the knowledge and confidence Deborah installs in you is a gift. Just booked my 3rd course and can’t wait. Paul Davies.
